Idol Hotel

Comments

This image was inspired by a cyberpunk short story by Alyssa Wong. From the first time that I read the story, I knew that I wanted to make an image based on this scene. This image is actually based on an early version of the story. The final version, published more than five years later, is greatly changed from the version that I read, so that this scene no longer appears. I still like the image though.

The neon sign outside was created as a text object in Carrara. The Katakana letters read 'Aidoru Hoteru' (a Japanese transliteration of the English 'Idol Hotel'), although only part of the phrase is visible; I had some problems with the modeler, and some characters didn't come out correctly.

The neon object is set to Emissive and provides most of the light in the scene. The letters themselves appear glowing white, while their reflections are green. This was not quite the effect I was looking for, but it seems to work.
